 Software for managing group of network elements in an enterprise called network management software

 Software for configuring and provisioning individual network elements that comes along with network elements called      network element management software

Network Management software does the controlling, planning, allocating, deploying, coordinating, and monitoring the resources of a network, network planning etc. ITU–T has split the general-management functionality offered by NMS into the five key areas - fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS).

Fault Management: alarm handling, trouble detection, trouble correction, test and acceptance, network recovery

Configuration Management: system turn-up, network provisioning, auto-discovery, backup and restore, database handling

Accounting Management: track service usage, bill for services

Performance Management: data collection, report generation, data analysis

Security Management: control NE access; enable NE functions, access logs

Here are some of the access methods for managing the network devices. Few of the access methods include the SNMP , command-line interface (CLIs), custom XML, CMIP , Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), Transaction Language 1 , CORBA , NETCONF , DCOM, Java/Web Services and the Java Management Extensions (JMX) or other proprietary interfaces.

Schemas include the WBEM , the Common Information Model , and MTOSI amongst others.
